Secretagogues: Meglitinides

Secretagogues increase insulin release from the pancreas by increasing the signaling to the pancreas. This increase of insulin helps decrease glucose levels; however, the extra workload on the pancreas can result in faster beta cell burnout which will eventually result in reduced insulin output. This class of secretagogues is short-acting and helps restore first-phase insulin release while preserving beta cell function.
