Debridement Agents

Debridement agents are enzymes, sodium hypochlorite (Dakin’s solution), maggots, or hypertonic saline that provide selective or non-selective removal of necrotic tissue or debris from a wound. They are indicated for debridement of necrotic tissue and liquefaction of slough in acute and chronic lesions, such as diabetic ulcers and other wounds. Must be covered with a primary dressing. Always read the package insert and use according to manufacturer’s recommendations. May be part of a procedure billed using a CPT code.
